You Had to Be There is a documentary podcast. Every episode is a story about some ambitious, outrageous, sometimes ill-advised comedic adventure.

In Vermont, we meet Fred Tuttle, a dairy farmer who unexpectedly became a comedy movie star and then a candidate for the U.S. Senate. In Providence, we meet the Empire Revue, a sketch comedy group that wrote a musical about a beloved Rhode Island hardware store that closed after 93 years in business.

The show is hosted by Will Thwaites, a documentary producer who’s worked on projects for Netflix, National Geographic, and PBS.
